Mount Fuji is located in Japan, on the island of Honshu, 60 miles southwest of Tokyo. Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan; it is 12,388 feet tall. Mount Fuji is now dormant. The last time this volcano erupted was in 1707. The Japanese call Mount Fuji Fuji-yama or Fuji-san. During climbing season, more then 10,000 people climb Mount Fuji. The word fuji comes from an Ainu meaning fire. |
