Dike, who is Virgo, the goddess of justice, lived on Earth, but was dismayed by the moral decline of humanity that she ascended to heaven to look down on the world above. In an another story Virgo is identified as Demeter, the corn goddess, whose daughter Persephone, was kidnapped by Hades, the god of the underworld. He forced Persephone to live in his underworld kingdom, as queen. Deter tried to rescue Persephone but she accidentally ate the food from the underworld, which meant that she could never return permanently to the land of living. Virgo is the second largest constellation in the sky. It is best seen in May. Virgo lies between Leo, and Libra. In the evening skies of May and July, you can see Virgo when you look south around 10pm. Virgo is one of the twelve constellations of the Zodiac. |
