Centaurs is a large constellation filled with objects of interest. Unfortunately most of these are too low to in the sky to see from the United States and Europe. An object that is visible to northerly observers is 3 Centauri near the constellation’s border with Hydra. Small telescopes show that this is a double star, about 300 light-years away from Earth Centaurus was a constellation known to the ancient Greeks 2,000 years ago. It was one of the figures mentioned by Ptomely in his book ALMAGEST published 140 A.D. In modern Greece only half of the constellation can be seen above the horizon.
